Piolo: A Financial Monologue

There is no fool’s gold beneath the surface of Piolo’s beliefs and values. Behind the disarmingly handsome face is a man who knows how to protect his dreams and priorities. In between the hectic schedule are charity works, sports, and his undying love for family.

The same can be said on how he handles his finances – smart, delicate, and purposeful. And as the latest addition to Sun Life Financial’s “It’s Time!” financial literacy advocacy, he is ready to impart the message of a bright and stable future.

On Money

My mother showed me the best attitude towards money, which is humility. She also taught me to use money to do good things. My faith also gave me a great foothold on my finances. Much has been given to me, and it is only right that I give something in return.

On Financial Planning

You have to know what is important to you, and starting early is the way to go. In fact, the life insurance I got for my son IƱigo has already matured. Now his future is secure, and I’m so happy to know that he could do anything he wants. So it really pays to put your money on the best financial baskets around.

On Spending Habits

I am very practical with the things I buy. I never spend beyond my means. After a long and tiring day, I splurge on food. But that’s it. My happiness does not rely on the things that I have. Also, I do save for rainy days. We never know the lemons that life may throw our way.

On Retirement

Even before I entered the entertainment industry, I saw myself retiring at a young age. It may be a change of career, or doing other things that I have always wanted to pursue. For instance, I want to have my own business someday. It is so exciting to think about the future if you’re protected and secured.

On Success

Never let it get to your head. I consider myself very blessed for the opportunities given to me. So I never let it go to waste. I work hard, fulfill my responsibilities, and always try to pay it forward. I know it sounds too heroic, but I want to be able to help when I can, whenever I can.

On Future Plans

In five years, I see myself being married. I want to see my kids grow up, and I want to be beside my wife through thick and thin. We are not going to be young forever, so I am now saving and investing for that chapter in my life. I want to protect their dreams, so I have to be ready for anything.

On Achieving Financial Freedom

Can I say that I am financially free? YES, yes I can. But I still invest on things that will matter in the future. I keep on saving up, so I can continue to be confident about my and my family’s future. It’s time to create the life we always want to live. No time like today, no place like the present to start. Again, it’s time!

On Being an It’s Time advocate

Sun Life has been securing the future of Filipinos for 115 years now. Even during the global financial crisis, they proved that they are very stable. They continue to fulfill their commitment to their policyholders. The It’s Time advocacy is such a noble initiative, one that can help millions of Filipinos fulfill their dreams. This makes me proud to be part of the Sun Life family.

PIOLO RUNS WITH THE SUN IN NEW TVC

Protect your dreams is the battle cry of Sun Life advocate Piolo Pascual. It’s Time!!

Running enthusiast and latest Sun Life Financial advocate Piolo Pascual rediscovers the charms of old Manila and a piece of Sun Life Financial Philippines (SLFP) history in a heart-thumping and edgy new TVC.

Inspiring Filipinos to take charge of their finances in order to protect their dreams, Pascual gives a personal take to Sun Life’s It’s Time! advocacy, the first advocacy of its kind in the Philippines to promote financial literacy and preparedness among Filipinos .

No guarantees

Shot near an old Binondo building that used to house Sun Life’s operations, the TVC shows how a harmless night can turn into a life-changing moment. It features Piolo in tip top shape, depicting a metaphor of life where anything can happen to us even at the top of our game, and the best you can do is to be prepared.

“The message of the TVC is beautiful and profound. We all have to realize that life offers no guarantees so we must always be prepared and protect our dreams from uncertaintyes,” explained Pascual.

Back to its roots

The TVC was a throwback to classic Manila, with the famous Jones Bridge at the background under an overcast evening sky,. For Sun Lifers, the TVC honors an important chapter of the company’s history in the Philippines. Home to SLFP’s local operations from 1951 to 1981, the Singson Building at the foot of Jones Bridge bore witness to post-War rehabilitation and the onset of Martial Law. A story that spanned three decades, it is an important section of Sun Life’s 115 years of service to Filipinos.

“Binondo is where everything started and today Sun Life continues to honor its commitment to Filipinos after more than a century of service. Our latest TVC not only delivers a relevant message for all of us, it also pays honor to our company’s glorious past and our on-going commitment to Filipinos,” said Riza Mantaring, President & CEO, SLF-Philippines.

Sun Life family

Now part of the Sun Life family and the It’s Time! advocacy, Pascual admits that the cause of financial literacy is very similar to his values in life. Though an accomplished actor and a sought-after endorser, he continues to be a practical man and a firm believer in saving for a rainy day.

Started in July 2009, Sun Life’s It’s Time! advocacy celebrates its first anniversary with Pascual joining other advocates Pia Magalona, Bam Aquino, James Yap and his son, Baby James.

With the TVC as a catalyst, Pascual encourages Filipinos to not leave anything to chance. “It is never too early to aspire for great things and never too early to protect your dreams. We all need to take charge of our financial future, not only for yourself but also for your loved ones,” Pascual concluded.

Indeed, It’s Time!!

Wonder Woman 2.0

by Mike Krumboltz

The re-imagined comic book heroine Wonder Woman is shown in this undated publicity photo released to Reuters June 30, 2010. The DC Comics Comic book super heroine has traded in her spangled hot pants for urban leggings and upped her street smarts in a 21st century make-over for the 69 year-old character. Attention all obsessive comic fans! Set your mood dials to "outraged." Wonder Woman, one of the most popular superheroes of all time, is getting a new look.

Even casual fans of the Amazon Princess can spot her famous threads a mile away. Blue shorts with white stars, a bold bustier, and bright red boots that make Superman's look downright tasteful. All that's about to change, though. Starting with this month's comic, Wonder Woman starts wearing pants.

You can almost hear the fanboys screaming. But, according to a popular blog from CNN, there is a reason for the switch. Writer J. Michael Straczynski, who is taking over writing the comic, commented on a DC Comics blog post, "I wanted to toughen her up, and give her a modern sensibility." She's been saving the world for 69 years. If you ask us, it's only fair that she finally treat herself to some new threads.

So, what are the specifics? The biggest news is that she'll lose the hot pants, and wear tight blue pants instead. The famous bracelets are still around, but, according to Straczynski, they'll be more colorful, "with a script W on each of them that form WW when she holds them side by side…and if you get hit by one of them, it leaves a W mark." As Straczynski puts it, "this is a Wonder Woman who signs her work."

But it's not just Wonder Woman's appearance that's been changed. Her back story is different, too. The New York Times explains: "In the reimagining of her story, Wonder Woman, instead of growing up on Paradise Island with her mother, Queen Hippolyta, and her Amazon sisters, is smuggled out as a baby when unknown forces destroy her home and slaughter its inhabitants." Clearly, this is a darker version for a more dangerous world.

Not surprisingly, the news of Wonder Woman's new look and history inspired huge searches on Yahoo!. Lookups for "wonder woman changes," "new wonder woman," and "wonder woman outfit" all roared to life. Others wanted to know more about Wonder Woman's alter ego. (FYI, she goes by the name Diana Price when she's not kicking criminal butt.) And lest you think her classic look will simply fade away, consider this: Searches on "sexy wonder woman outfit" have already started their ascent in preparation for Halloween.

Public 'webphone' now in Philippines

MANILA, Philippines - The country's first "webphone" resembles a public phone booth, but is loaded with more services.

Called E-Stop, the latest offering of Ayala-led Globe Telecom Inc. puts together the payphone and Internet services in a touch screen device, allowing users to call, surf the Internet, and send e-mails.

It can be found in Quezon City's TriNoma mall, which is also owned by the Ayala Group.

"We are proud to bring another first in the Philippines. We are excited to introduce the new all-in-one Webphone service that consumers can conveniently access if they need to call or connect to the Internet," said Globe president and chief executive officer Ernest Cu.

Globe rolled out the first E-Stop in partnership with TouchMedia Philippines under a proof-of-concept trial.

Asked about the market's response to Globe's latest service, Cu said, "We are glad that after more than 2 weeks since we started with the first Globe E-Stop, we've had an overwhelming reception from the consumers in terms of revenues, usage and service."

As it enhances its public webphone service, Globe said it intends to offer text messaging, reloads, bill payments and advertising at the E-Stop in the future.
