Women know best

by IVY ONG (Advertising Board of the Philippines)

The 10 Consumer Trends shaping 2012 pictures the rise of a different female consumer. In the study by top marketing communications firm JWT, women are found to be the most empowered they have ever been, exercising the right to choose their own path in life.

Filipino women figure predominantly in the local setting of JWT’s consumer trends. As 2012 comes to a close, we realize how deeply the power of decision-making and purchasing rest with wives, mothers, titas, lolas, daughters and girl friends. They have become “masters of omnipresent thrift” – a title many women acknowledge with Pinay pride.

The Advertising Board of the Philippines (AdBoard) looks forward to 2013 and the future with hope that this consumer trend of 2012 would become a way of life for the industry. In it’s Code of Ethics, AdBoard urges the industry to develop “awareness and commitment to its social responsibilities, including the promotion of values”. One of its principles as an umbrella organization is to practice advertising with “social, economic and cultural responsibility to the community”, keeping in mind that “the advertiser’s interest should take into account community interest”.

The crucial role of women in the economy, and more importantly in the fabric of society, should never again fall into the background. It is the industry’s responsibility to further encourage the participation of women in business and social affairs.

Create shared value with women, because while the consumer is queen today, the industry – the whole country for that matter – would do well to uphold women and their capabilities. There are messages that speak directly to women, so marketing communications strategies could be made to be more relevant to the female sector.

Many products and services in the market may be focused on women, whether currently or in the past, but there are many differences between women of previous generations and the women of today. Highlight products and services which offer convenience and ease to the lives of the modern, working Filipina. Give them rewards for juggling many roles in their lives, from being a breadwinner to being a mother, friend or daughter.

Two notable endeavors that address the needs and aspirations of women in this time are Metrobank Femme Visa and Shakey’s V-League.

Metrobank Femme is a credit card developed especially for women. It offers perks, rewards and privileges for its users to enjoy. Shakey’s V-League highlights women’s volleyball in Philippine sports. It began as an inter-collegiate tournament and has grown to include national and international teams. The acclaim for Shakey’s V-League as players compete each year inspires young women to participate in sports.

The AdBoard believes in empowering women as individuals and as decision-makers. The marketing communications industry is an influencer of ideals. In this capacity, the AdBoard encourages practitioners to listen to the voice of the Filipina consumer, and share in their challenges, hopes, dreams and successes.

Hygiene 24 and Hygiene Pro: the perfect sanitizing tandem

as my readers already know, i am currently enrolled in a culinary school. in school, we are taught how to cook and bake all sorts of mouthwatering food. we are also taught sanitation and proper handling of food from receiving the raw ingredients to storing and serving the finished product.

since i have been baking at home for more practice and indulgence in baked goods, i try to observe proper hygiene like what is implemented in school. because, if and when i open my own restaurant or food business, i need to observe such decorum towards my products. after all, it is what's gonna bring in the income in the future.

the life and success of  food businesses depend on the quality of the food you'll be serving. anyone should know that quality of any products is dependent on how it is made - and cleanliness is definitely one of the major factors that makes up a quality food product.

you need to ensure the ingredients that make up your product are clean. and one way to make sure the ingredients are clean is to wash it. but that is not enough. you also need to clean and sanitize your work area as well. even if your ingredients are clean, if your work station is not, it is useless, it will still be unsanitary. germs and microbes are still there and can therefore contaminate the food you're making.

with that in mind, i have been looking for a surface sanitizer just like the one we use in school. sadly, i haven't found any wherever i inquired. luckily, i received a package containing a sampler of Hygiene 24 and Hygiene Pro.

Hygiene Pro is the surface sanitizer i've been looking for. it's not the same as the one in school, but it is definitely effective. i wouldn't want to risk my food products be contaminated and have people who eat my food eat unclean food. i wouldn't want to cause food poisoning, or worse, an epidemic among my family, relatives and friends. it's with them that i build trust and confidence that my products are of great quality.

Hygiene Pro is sprayed on after you have washed the work station/surface with soap and water. washing only cleans the surface by removing visible dirt and soil. sanitizing thoroughly cleanses the work surface by eliminating all germs and microbes that cause contamination and illnesses.

Hygiene 24, on the other hand, is the perfect sanitizer for me. use it after washing your hands to ensure thorough disinfection and protection. i love how it is foam and not gel, which is usually, if not always, sticky and uncomfortable, because of the mineral oil manufacturers include "for moisturizing" purposes. seriously, i need hand sanitizer, not moisturizer. this is why i preferred using alcohol instead of hand sanitizer gels because i believe you pick up more bacteria if your hands are wet than dry, and to me, sticky is equals to wetness.

see for yourself what i experience with Hygiene 24 and Hygiene Pro. for more information about Hygiene 24 and Hygiene Pro products, visit www.hsi.com.ph and www.facebook.com/247protected or call 836-5886!

Wheatgrass Chronicles Part 9

hey there! sorry, i skipped a month without blogging and i haven't realized it until today. school has made me that busy. sometimes i think it sucks, but hey, i chose this path, i have to stand by my choice. and the tuition my dad paid for culinary school isn't a joke. it's quite a LOT.

a lot of things happened in the past month - some ends, some starts, some trials, some triumphs, some losses, some hellos, some goodbyes. nevertheless, i am still here, and i like to think i still stand tall. positive thinking! it's what matters and it's what gets me going.

and here now is December - the season to be chubby.. oops! i mean jolly. don't deprive yourself from food. just don't binge. well, it's more like, do not deprive yourself because you'll only tend to binge once you lost control. and losing control is inevitable at this time of year.

i feel sad for those people who starve themselves on this happy season for an event before, during or after the holidays. i remember last year, a friend of mine refuses to eat scrumptuous food served to us on a mini-bridal shower because is on a strict diet because she has to attend two weddings over the holidays. sad. but funny she gained all the weight after. hahahaha :p

anyway, enough of the drama. i have been thinking of recipes i could share but i'm too busy to even touch my recipe book. so, i ended up searching the web for recipes easy enough for my dear readers to do for the holidays - with the inclusion of a packet of wheatgrass or two.

i have been making mostly desserts because i was in a baking course for four months. now i am in a culinary/cooking course the past month but we haven't started cooking.. in short, i will recommend recipes where you can sneak in a packet of wheatgrass. take note, i can only recommend, i can't share recipes yet because of time constraint. go find the recipes in the internet and include some wheatgrass in it. as long as you follow the recipe instructions, you won't go wrong.

what you can do are the following:

  • cheesecake - either you can make the cream cheese filling green, or you can make a wheatgrass base. either way, having a wheatgrass cheesecake is easy and very possible. you can even have a wheatgrass base and wheatgrass filling! and maybe, even syrup too!
  • polvoron - wheatgrass polvoron recipe can be found on the Easy Pha-max website, on the recipes tab. or just click here.
  • pastillas - a green pastillas may look semi-yucky, but it's wheatgrass, so it would definitely taste good. and it's healthy.
  • gelatin shots - clear or green gelatin with wheatgrass molded on shotglasses. a must try! and a first. you got it here first!
  • cream puffs - i know i haven't shared the recipe yet, but try looking for it in the internet for the mean time. add the wheatgrass on the pastry cream to make it a green puff.
  • muffins - instead of blueberries or chocolate chips, stir in a packet of wheatgrass and stir it a bit to create a marble effect.

The Cake and the Flowers

here's our cake for the competition. it doesn't really show how disastrous the top tier got because it's cute no matter what. the dolls were supposed to tell a lovestory - from being friends to lovers to a married couple. the dolls in wedding attire weren't able to hold still in the top tier and fell off, we said they committed suicide, and called them Daniel and Katerina of Walang Hanggan.

i made all the gumpaste flowers that were placed on the cake.

Wheatgrass in coffee makes perfect sense to coffee lovers

One to two cups of Bio-Coffee is purrrfect, the one and only alkaline coffee in the market.

Bio-Coffee 4-in-1 is a good blend of Easy Pha-max wheatgrass powder, instant Arabica coffee, non-dairy creamer and oligosaccharide (natural honey).

You can drink it again and again without turning acidic due to the alkaline property of wheatgrass.

Dissolve sachet in a cup of hot water, stir, sniff, enjoy its aroma and savor the aftertaste of healthy coffee.

Early Christmas promo price is P335 for the Introductory Pack of 10 sachets. Each sachet weighs 20g.

For free delivery, call 890-1111.

The coffee is also available in Easy Pha-max wheatgrass kiosks located in leading malls like SM, Robinsons, Festival Mall.

Hello Kitty, Hello Christmas at SM North Edsa!

here's one event today i missed because some people are turning me into one hell of a lean, mean baking machine, ergo i can't leave home. i'm not complaining though. just the part that i wasn't able to come to this cute event at SM North. it's Hello Kitty! whining about not being able to be there is inevitable when the event is this cute.

i'm not sure though, but i think Hello Kitty's gonna be on display for quite some time. it seems Hello Kitty will be spending Christmas at SM North, so i will fret not. i'll visit SM North soon.

Global Academy : Flying High @ FIVE

i've been meaning to blog about my school's homecoming party but as i've said in my previous post/s, i've been damn busy with a lot of things and happenings, so i guess i'll just do a post-event feature of it.

October 29 marked the day of the Grand Alumni Homecoming of Global Culinary and Hospitality Academy as it reached its 5th anniversary. the event was hailed as "Flying High @ 5" and it was a very busy day as competitions were held in the morning and afternoon, and the Homecoming party itself held later that night at the Skye Lounge at the W Building in Bonifacio High Street.

the competition held in the morning were divided in 5 categories:

  • Wedding Cake Live Competition
  • Cupcake Decorating Contest
  • Toss-a-Salad Competition
  • Chocolate Cake Innovation
  • Plated Desserts

as i've mentioned before, i joined the wedding cake competition along with 2 other classmates. well, long story short, we lost but we aren't feeling bad about it, or at least i am. it's funny that our friends among the audience were more nervous than we who were actually the ones put under pressure.

our cake was the one with dolls and flowers. it's theme was "Lovestory", which explains the dolls on every tier, and we named it "The Story of Us". yes, it is inspired by two Taylor Swift songs. it's top tier got ruined because it wasn't able to handle the weight of the wedding dolls. on the upside of it, everything in our cake is edible and yummy, from the dolls, to the flowers, to all three tiers of the red velvet cake. and we were able to make fun of it by adding a somewhat-hidden subtitle beneath the "The Story of Us" title where i wrote "looks a lot like a tragedy now" because of the fallen dolls.

Wheatgrass Chronicles part 8

i haven't blogged in a while.. a month and 5 days to be exact.

why?

culinary school has got me so busy, i am in a cake competition which will commence tomorrow, and i went on a semi-hiatus from blogging as a way to protest the stupidity that happened a while back in the Philippine cyberworld. well, that and i'm really just so busy.

so, here i resume blogging as it is our semestral break, and i kinda need to get myself away from cakes and frostings. just now, i am using some minutes from preparing cake competition needs. i need to free myself from cakes. it's delicious, but it's driving me crazy because that is all i've been doing the past weeks and it's somewhat sickening. i need to get away from it even for just some minutes.

since i'm semi-free the past week, i dropped by the Easy Pha-max office. i decided to surprise them with some cream puffs i made. it was a hit in my mom's office, i thought why not let them try? but the catch is that, instead of the plain old cream filling, i made cream filling with wheatgrass. it's so funny, i got one of them to bite right into it, and then the green cream filleing oozed out of it just as i was explaining what i did to it. hahaha! surprise, surprise. :D

i was trying to get some reviews of what i made from them and they say it's good. somehow, i really need to be convinced that it is really good before i share the recipe for my "Green Puffs". i will share the recipe, i just need time to be free and for all these crazy things to end.

wait for it, i'll post it soon.

Wheatgrass Chronicles part 7

i've tried making cookies using Easy Pha-Max wheatgrass with honey but ended up in a near-fail situation. my cookie dough melted when i placed it in the oven. i thought about how it happened and drew just one conclusion: the honey (in powder form) with the wheatgrass packet melted so it became runny while it was baking.

you may wonder why i said near-fail, right? because it almost failed. it failed because i originally aimed for it to become cookies but it ended up cupcakes. i was able to salvage it by placing it in cupcake sheets and baked them. i wasn't really expecting it to be anything, i only wanted to salvage all the ingredients than to waste them. after all, wheatgrass costs quite much, not to mention you spent money on all the other ingredients.

now that i witnessed it myself, i know now i should use Easy-Phamax with Honey on cupcakes, and maybe, Easy Pha-Max Wheatgrass Pure if i wanted cookies. beware though, that i haven't proved this cookie mix won't be near-fail again. well, after all, you can always salvage it and turn it into cupcakes.

so here are the ingredients. be reminded though, that if you use Easy Pha-max Wheatgrass with Honey, you'll end up with cupcakes, and Easy Pha-max Wheatgrass Pure if you aim for cookies.

113g butter
75g white sugar
83g brown sugar
1piece egg
5ml vanilla
115g all-purpose flour
89g oatmeal
1g salt
2g baking powder
4g baking soda
4 packets Easy Pha-max Wheatgrass (with Honey for cupcakes, Pure for cookies)

1. mix butter and sugars until butter's color lightens (use electric mixer if available, or hand mix in a bowl with spatula)
2. beat the egg in a separate bowl, add the vanilla
3. add to the butter mixture slowly while continuously mixing
4. sift the flour, salt, baking powder and baking soda and mix with the oatmeal
5. slowly add the dry ingredients to the butter and egg mixture while continuously mixing
6. add the packets of wheatgrass and mix until well blended
7. form medium-sized balls from dough and place about 2 inches apart in a tray (cookies); spoon into cupcake molds lined with cupcake paper liners
8. bake for about 12-15 minutes at 177 degrees celsius (until the cookie top is starting to brown; insert a toothpick on the cupcake top and see if the dough doesn't stick)
9. cool and serve.

President Aquino’s SONA reflects ESQUIRE FINANCING’s devotion to Philippines’ economic growth.

Data from the Bangko Sentral showed that micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) make up 99.6 percent of the total number of enterprises, account for almost 70 percent of total jobs generated, and contribute 32 percent of the GDP.

President Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino‘s recent State of The Nation Address (SONA) stirred up hope and inspiration, given the numbers from Bangko Sentral. Aside from a rundown of his cabinet’s accomplishments and to do list, Aquino proudly emphasized that “what was once the sick man of Asia now brims with vitality”. The President substantiated this claim with the 6.4 percent growth in the GDP in the first quarter of the year, the highest in Southeast Asia. Aquino shared how commentators from the international community have lauded these achievements, with Foreign Policy Magazine even calling the Philippines “Asia’s Next Tiger” and financial giant Morgan Stanley investing a billion dollars in Philippine markets.

ESQUIRE FINANCING Inc’s President/CEO Rajan Uttamchandani shares the country leader’s and the international media’s optimism and believes that more small and medium entrepreneurs take advantage of the strong economy. Ashley's Day Out at Infinity Tutorial Services

Infinity Tutorial Services had a Family Day last August 3 and I was invited through Buyanihan Digital. It was requested that I bring friends, kid-relatives or friends with kids so we can experience fun and learning altogether. But sadly, those who I have invited weren't able to come due to (about-to-be-super) bad weather. Luckily, I called my aunt asking if I can bring my cousin (who is already an adult) to the Fam Day the next day. She said they'd be coming over to our house the following day so we'd try to make it work from there. She also mentioned she'd be bringing her friend and her friend's grandkid, Ashley, so maybe we can bring them to the event.

Saturday morning, I was expecting them to arrive early/earlier and they arrived at noon. Late! Not that I'm blaming anyone, they're giving me a favor as well, but I have accepted the fact that we are going to be late to the event since it's gonna start at 3pm. We left our place around 3pm and arrived at Infinity around 4:30pm. The fun starts there.

Upon entering Infinity Tutorial Services unit, Ashley instantly said, "Whoa!". She liked it. Cool. There were kids in ballet attire, I think they have just finished their ballet class. We were welcomed by people from both Buyanihan Digital and Infinity and were led to a room where we can paint.

We probably were in their Arts and Crafts room, then after a while, I looked around the unit and there were play, lecture and dance rooms. The lecture rooms is where I found a kiosk of Easy Pha-max Wheatgrass. They probably had lectures about health and healthy eating. I came back and told my aunt about the rooms. Ashley sneaked out of our sight and checked it out for herself, all the while when we were checking out Infinity's brochures. When Ashley came back, she's already loving the place. We let her play, we continued painting (she asked me to make her a butterfly mask because there already was a cat mask).

Time has come for us to leave and we found Ashley alone in the play room having the time of her life. The other kids were in the dance room learning Karate (they were the kids from Ballet class, imagine how funny that looked), so there aren't many to play with. She still didn't wanna leave so her grandma told her they'd come back, but this time she'll be learning how to play the violin. They were really considering that, me and my aunt on the otherhand, are thinking of enrolling as well. I wanted Foreign Languages and violin lessons, I think she wanted violin lessons too, but we're still both busy with me in school and she with business.

For more information about Infinity Tutorial Services and what lessons they offer, call them at (02) 4785957,  09228785919 or 09178005046. E-mail them at CS@infinitytutorial.com. Official website is www.infinitytutorial.com. Give them a visit in Units 1003-1006 Trade and Finance Tower, 7th cor. 32nd Sts., The Fort, Taguig City (near Starbucks, S&R, and St. Luke's Medical Center).
